Exploring the summer

So how about some exploring?

In the fine tradition of explorers everywhere it is essential to gather information before heading out. I will absolutely recommend this book "The Species Seekers : Heroes, Fools, and the Mad Pursuit of Life on Earth" by Richard Conniff (2012).

"A meticulously researched and witty tale of the history of natural history, reporting on the brave men and women who went to the ends of the Earth in search of new life forms, from Linnaeus, who invented a taxonomic classification scheme to organise life, to twentieth-century medical doctors, who used their knowledge of new species to conquer epidemic diseases"

Why not go to Africa and investigate the evolution of the giraffe? Is Lamarc or Darwin winning the argument?

Lamarck suggested that early short-necked giraffes stretched their necks their whole life to reach the highest branches. Slowly, over several generations, they developed longer and longer necks as a result of continued stretching. On the other hand, according to Charles Darwin genes for long necks were gave an individual an advantage over other short necked individuals. This way the genes for "long necks" were passed on.

Journaling is an important aspect of exploring. Grap a good quality notebook, pen and ink. A keen eye for the details of nature is not a bad thing either. Pen and ink can be bought in a nice little shop or here: https://bogogpen.dk or in other speciality shops.

What to wear on such an expedition? Ladies could opt for the costume depicted below in a magazine from 1907. It is described as a practical English wool travelling costume. A black velvet collar surrounds the tapering neckline of the otherwise simple dress. The skirt has nine pleats and the jacket has two pockets.

May you have a happy exploring summer
